Dr. Kaup is a Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Neurology Center of Southern California (CA License #PSY26484). She joined the practice in 2019. Dr. Kaup provides neuropsychological evaluation services for patients with a broad range of cognitive, neurological, and psychiatric conditions, with particular interest in working with patients with age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
Dr. Kaup obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Iowa (2002-2006). She earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with emphasis in neuropsychology from the San Diego State University / University of California San Diego (UCSD) Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology (2006-2012). She completed the UCSD/San Diego VA Psychology Internship Training Program (2011-2012) and 2.5 years of postdoctoral training with the Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) Fellowship in Dementia at the San Francisco VA Health Care System / University of California San Francisco (UCSF; 2012-2015).
Dr. Kaup’s predoctoral clinical training included rotations at the San Diego VA and UCSD focused on neuropsychology, psychological assessment and psychotherapy. As a clinical psychology intern at UCSD Medical Center (Neuropsychological Assessment department and Senior Behavioral Health), she received further training in general neuropsychology and geriatric neuropsychology. During her postdoctoral fellowship at San Francisco VA/UCSF, she received advanced training in clinical research on cognitive aging and dementia and advanced clinical training in neuropsychology. Throughout her training, Dr. Kaup engaged in research projects related to aging, such as cognitive and neuroimaging studies of healthy aging and longitudinal studies to identify dementia risk factors and factors associated with cognitive resilience in aging.
Before joining the Neurology Center of Southern California, Dr. Kaup was a Clinical Research Psychologist and Staff Clinical Neuropsychologist at San Francisco VA Health Care System (2015-2019), and an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the UCSF Department of Psychiatry Weill Institute for Neurosciences (2015-2019). Her research included studies related to traumatic brain injury in older Veterans. In her clinical work at San Francisco VA, she provided neuropsychological evaluation services for Veterans, including younger through older adult patients, and she provided clinical supervision for neuropsychology postdoctoral fellows and clinical psychology interns in APA-accredited training programs.
Dr. Kaup has published 29 peer-reviewed research articles on topics including cognitive and brain aging, traumatic brain injury, and mental health conditions in older adulthood. She is a member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, California Psychological Association, American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, American Psychological Association, International Neuropsychological Society, and the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTARRT).
